You got married two years ago. The nikah was done properly. Now a visa office or a bank asks for your marriage certificate and you realise you never got one. Or your wife's CNIC still says unmarried and the passport office wants proof. Where does that certificate come from? This article shows you.

What is a NADRA marriage certificate?

The certificate you are looking for is the computerised Marriage Registration Certificate. People call it the NADRA certificate because NADRA runs the record. It is not the same as the nikah nama. The nikah nama is the marriage contract. It records the dower, the witnesses and the conditions you both agreed. The computerised certificate is the official record that shows your marriage is registered. You often need it for a passport, a spouse visa, a loan or an inheritance matter.

What does the law say about marriage registration?

Every marriage under Muslim law in Pakistan must be registered. That is section 5 of the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance, 1961, and you can read the full text on the official Pakistan Code website. The law gives the Union Council the job of licensing a Nikah Registrar. Only one registrar is licensed for each ward. The registrar writes the nikah nama in the form the rules prescribe.

If a marriage is not solemnized by the registrar, the person who did solemnize it must report it to the registrar. The law makes this a punishable offence. A person who breaks this rule can get simple imprisonment for up to three months, or a fine of up to one thousand rupees, or both. So registration is not optional. It is the law.

What is the difference between the nikah nama and the certificate?

The nikah nama is filled at the nikah. Under the rules made under the Ordinance, it is written in quadruplicate. One copy stays in the registrar's register. One copy goes to the bride. One goes to the groom. One goes to the Union Council. The computerised marriage certificate is issued later, from the Union Council record. The nikah nama alone does not prove the marriage was registered. That is why offices ask for the certificate.

How do I get the certificate, step by step?

First, check that your nikah is registered. Ask the Union Council that covers the area where the nikah took place. Or ask the registrar. The record has to exist before any certificate can be issued. Our guide on how to check your marriage certificate online in Pakistan explains what you can verify from home and what needs a visit.

Then find the office that serves you. In many cities it is the Union Council. In Punjab you may go through an e-Khidmat Markaz. A NADRA Registration Centre may also accept the application. Confirm the route before you travel.

Take your documents. The original registered nikah nama and a photocopy. CNICs of both spouses. Passport size photographs if asked. Witness CNIC details if asked. Evidence about a previous marriage if that applies. If a spouse lives abroad, take the passport and any authorisation documents needed for a representative.

Pay the fee at the counter and keep the receipt. Fees are set by the office and they change. Do not trust an old figure you saw online. Ask for the current schedule and take a receipt.

When the certificate is issued, check it against the nikah nama and the CNICs. Compare names, fathers' names and dates. If something is wrong, fix it before you use the certificate.

What if my nikah was never registered?

Start at the Union Council, not at NADRA. Take the original nikah nama if you have it. The office may ask for witness statements, photographs or family records. There is usually a late registration fee. If a long time has passed, the office may ask for a court order. The registration has to be established first. The certificate comes after.

What if there is a mistake on the certificate?

The correction route depends on where the error started. If the error is in the nikah nama, the Union Council holds the record. If it is on the certificate, the office that issued it handles it. Ask which record needs correction and what evidence is required. Repeating the same application usually does not help.

My nikah nama is lost. What now?

The Union Council register may still have the record. Ask the council if it can provide a copy through its current process. A lost copy does not mean the record is gone.

I need the certificate for use abroad

Ask the receiving authority what it wants. Some countries want attestation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Some want embassy attestation, an apostille or a translation. Do not assume the same process works for every country. Check first.

Why does this matter?

A registered marriage protects both of you. It is the proof you need for a spouse visa, a passport, a bank loan and inheritance. In a divorce or maintenance case, the certificate helps show the marriage existed. It also confirms your marital status when you update your CNIC.
