How to Check Your Marriage Certificate Online in Pakistan

Your visa file is almost ready. Then the checklist asks for a marriage certificate. You open the cupboard and find only the old nikah nama from your wedding day. Where is the certificate? Was the nikah even registered? You are not the only one asking. This is one of the most common family document problems in Pakistan, and the answer is simpler than people think.

What do you actually have?

The nikah nama is the paper signed at your nikah. It is handwritten in Urdu and it records the dower, the witnesses and the conditions you both agreed to. The Marriage Registration Certificate, or MRC, is the computerized version. It is printed in Urdu and English, and it comes from the union council that registered your nikah. People call it the NADRA marriage certificate, but NADRA does not issue it. The union council, the TMA, the cantonment board or the arbitration council in Islamabad does. NADRA runs the database and verifies the record.

What does the law say?

Marriage registration is not optional. Section 5 of the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance, 1961 says every marriage solemnized under Muslim law must be registered. The nikah registrar sends the nikah nama to the union council in whose area the marriage took place, and the council then issues the computerized certificate. Foreign governments describe the same chain when they check Pakistani documents. The UK Home Office guidance on Pakistan says couples must register the marriage with the union council, and the council then issues the Marriage Registration Certificate.

Can you check it online? Partly.

There is no public website where you type a CNIC number and see a marriage certificate. NADRA's instant online verification covers CNIC, NICOP and POC numbers, not marriage certificates. Marriage records stay private under data protection rules. But there are three things you can do online, depending on what you need.

Scan the QR code on the certificate. A computerized MRC carries a QR code. Scan it with your phone and it opens a page on NADRA's registration system that shows the record. This is how offices abroad check the document. It works for a certificate you already hold.

Apply for a copy through the Pak ID app. NADRA's official app and the Pak Identity website accept marriage certificate applications online. This works only when your nikah is already registered and the record is in the system. NADRA's Civil Registration Management System, CRMS, runs in more than 11,000 union councils across the country, as NADRA states.

Check your family record. Apply for a Family Registration Certificate from NADRA. It lists your family members. If your spouse is in it, your marriage is in the record. This is the closest thing to an online check of your own marital status.

What can you not check online?

You cannot look up someone else's marriage. There is no portal for that. If a court, a bank or a visa office needs to confirm a certificate, the office that issued it is the one that can confirm. You ask there in person or through a written request.

What if the record does not show up?

This happens with older marriages and with nikahs done in small towns. The paper record was never entered into the computer system. The fix starts at the union council. Take the original nikah nama, the CNICs of both spouses and copies of both fathers' CNICs. Ask the office to enter the record into CRMS. Once the record is in the system, the certificate can be printed. In Punjab the computerized certificate costs Rs 300 and takes about 3 working days, according to the Punjab local government department. Other districts follow the same pattern with small differences.

What if the nikah was never registered?

Some marriages were never registered at all. The nikah happened, the feast happened, and no one sent the paper to the union council. This catches up with people later, especially women and children. The Express Tribune reported the story of a man who went to offices five times to get his marriage certificate made. NADRA sent him to the union council, the council took two weeks, and updating his CNIC took three more visits. Children of unregistered marriages face problems getting birth certificates, CNICs and passports. A wife without a registered marriage can struggle to claim maintenance or inheritance when something goes wrong.

If your nikah was never registered, the union council can register it now. This is late registration. Take the nikah nama, the witnesses and the CNICs. The office may ask for extra proof and a late fee. We have covered the full route in how to get a marriage certificate from NADRA.

New marriages can now register online

For new marriages the process is going digital. In October 2025 NADRA launched online nikah registration through the Pak ID app, the first service of its kind in Pakistan. It started in three pilot districts: Chakwal, Jhelum and Nankana Sahib. Couples there can register a nikah without visiting the union council, and the record then moves to the council for the certificate. The same idea is spreading. In Islamabad the civic authority and NADRA have also moved birth and marriage registration online.

Why does this matter?

A marriage certificate is not paper for the drawer. It is the proof that protects a family. You need it for a spouse visa, a CNIC update, a child's B form and for divorce or inheritance matters. When a marriage is challenged, the registered record is the evidence. This is why questions like is cousin marriage legal in Pakistan and is court marriage valid in Islam in Pakistan always come back to the nikah record and the law, not to what people say. For use abroad, the certificate may also need attestation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Ask the receiving embassy what it wants before you start.
