You are buying a plot or opening a shop, and someone asks for your NTN. Or the bank asks for it when you open an account for your business. You have heard the word but you are not sure what it is, or why you need one. This guide explains the NTN number in Pakistan plainly, with the real rules from FBR.
What is an NTN?
NTN stands for National Tax Number. It is the number the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) gives you when you register for income tax in Pakistan. It is your identity inside the tax system, the same way your CNIC is your identity as a citizen.
Here is a detail people often miss. If you are an individual, your own 13 digit CNIC is treated as your NTN. For a company or an association of persons (AOP), the NTN is a separate 7 digit number, like 4174941-3. The digit after the dash is called the check number. You get the number and a password when you are e-enrolled on the IRIS portal, per the FBR registration rules.
Who needs an NTN?
You need one if you earn income that the tax law covers. That includes:
- Business income, even a small shop or a side trade
- Freelance or self employed work
- Salary above the taxable limit
- Property income, like rent you receive
- Capital gains, like profit from selling property or shares
A company or an AOP must register. A salaried person with income above the limit must register too. If you are not sure whether your income crosses the limit, it is usually safer to register anyway, because you cannot become an active tax filer without an NTN.
How to get an NTN online
You can register yourself from home. The FBR runs the online portal called IRIS. This is the official way:
- Go to iris.fbr.gov.pk and open the new registration page.
- Keep ready your CNIC (or NICOP or passport if you are an overseas Pakistani), your active mobile number, your email, and your address.
- Choose the right category, an individual, a company, or an AOP.
- Fill in your personal details. If you have business income, add the business name, address, and the type of work.
- If you earn salary, give your employer's name and the employer's NTN. If you earn rent, give the property details.
- Submit the form with your scanned documents.
When FBR processes it, you get your NTN or registration number and a password. That password lets you log into IRIS, which is the only place you can file your income tax return online.
If you do not want to do it online, you can go to the facilitation counter at a tax house in your city and register there with paper copies of the same documents.
NTN is not the same as being a filer
This confuses a lot of people. Having an NTN does not make you a tax filer. Filer status depends on your return. When you file your income tax return for a tax year, FBR puts your name on the Active Taxpayer List, or ATL. That list is the official record of people who filed their returns.
So the sequence is simple. First you register and get an NTN. Then you file your return every year. Once your return is filed, your name appears on the ATL and you are treated as an active filer. The ATL is published on 1 March every year and stays valid until the end of February the next year, and FBR keeps updating it. Since late 2024 it is updated daily rather than weekly.
Why filer status matters
Filer and non-filer status changes how much tax is taken from you on certain transactions. In Pakistan a non-filer often pays roughly double the withholding tax that a filer pays, and in some cases, like on vehicles, up to triple. This applies to things like bank profit, property sales, vehicle purchases, and other payments.
Being a filer is not just about avoiding extra tax. It also makes once-a-year transactions easier to explain. FBR keeps records of your bank deposits, your property, and your vehicle purchases. If your wealth does not match your income, you may have to explain it. Filing on time keeps a clean record.
How to check your NTN and filer status
You can verify an NTN on the FBR website by entering the NTN or the CNIC. You can also check whether your name is on the ATL. For an individual, you can send an SMS with the word ATL, then your 13 digit CNIC, to 9966 and it returns your filer status. These checks are free and official.

Questions people ask
Do I need an NTN if my income is below the taxable limit?
To become an active filer you file a return, and to file you need to register first. Even if your income is below the limit, registering lets you keep a clean filer status, which lowers the withholding tax on your everyday transactions.
Can a freelancer get an NTN?
Yes. If you earn money from freelance work you can register as an individual and get an NTN.
Is my NTN the same as my CNIC?
For an individual, yes. FBR uses your 13 digit CNIC as your NTN or registration number. Companies and AOPs get a separate 7 digit NTN.
Does an NTN make me automatically a filer?
No. You must file your income tax return for the year, and then you appear on the Active Taxpayer List.
