Your cousin in Lahore has been asking for weeks. Can Pakistanis go to Qatar without a visa? Or is it free to enter? The short answer is no, it is not free, and no, you do not get visa free entry. But the good news is you can get a visa on arrival at the airport in Doha, and it is cheap.
Here is what the law and Qatar's own rules actually say, so you do not get a surprise at immigration.
Is Qatar visa free for Pakistanis?
No. Pakistan is not on Qatar's visa free entry list. The official Visit Qatar visa checker lets you pick your nationality, and for Pakistan it returns the same result every time: visa on arrival, with a hotel booking needed through Discover Qatar. You pay a fee when you land. It is not visa free, and it is not free.
Many people mix up the two. Visa on arrival means you still get a visa, you just collect it at the airport after you show your papers. Visa free means you walk in with nothing but your passport. Qatar treats Pakistani passports under the first group.
How much does the Qatar visa on arrival cost?
The visa on arrival costs 100 Qatari riyals. In Pakistani rupees that works out to roughly 7,700, though the exact figure moves with the exchange rate. You pay it at the airport before you go to the immigration counter.
You get 30 days on that visa. You can extend it once for another 30 days, which brings you to 60 days total. To extend, you confirm you still have a valid return ticket.
What do you need to get it at the airport?
Qatar does not let you just show up with a passport. The rules are set out on the official Visit Qatar site and on Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs page. You need all of these:
- A passport valid for at least three months from the date you arrive
- A hotel booking made through Discover Qatar, the approved booking service
- Travel health insurance covering at least one month, which costs around 50 Qatari riyals
- A confirmed return or onward ticket
- Cash or a working card for the visa fee
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Pakistan explains the steps. First you book your hotel on the Discover Qatar website. Then you buy the health insurance, usually from QIC or QLM, and you get a receipt by email. Carry that receipt with you. When you land at Hamad International Airport, you go to the Discover Qatar desk before immigration to get your papers stamped. Only then do you move to the immigration counters for the entry visa, your eye scan, and your biometrics.
Does Pakistanis flying from Pakistan need a polio certificate?
When you travel directly from Pakistan, carry up to date polio vaccination proof. Law firm Al Tamimi, in its update on Qatar's tourist visa changes, notes that Pakistani nationals travelling directly from Pakistan must provide a certificate of vaccination against polio according to the procedures in place. Airlines routinely ask for it at check in, so keep it with your passport.
Can you apply for a Qatar visa before you fly?
Yes. If you do not want to handle the paperwork at the airport, you can apply online through the official Hayya platform. For Pakistani tourists the relevant option is the A2 entry visa. It costs the same 100 Qatari riyals. The advantage is that a lot of the checks are done before you travel, so on arrival you move faster through immigration.
Whichever route you take, you still need the Discover Qatar hotel booking. The Hayya application asks for your accommodation during the process.
Can you work in Qatar on this visa?
No. This is a tourist visa only. It does not give you the right to take a job or run a business in Qatar. If you are going to work, you need a proper work visa sponsored by your employer in Qatar. Al Tamimi is clear on this: the tourist visas do not entitle anyone to work in Qatar. People who plan to work must get the right visa before they fly.
