You gave your report at a police station in Lahore, Faisalabad, or Multan. Days pass and you hear nothing. You want to know whether a case was registered and what is happening with it. Going back to the station means sitting for hours.
In Punjab you have official online options. The province records every FIR digitally, and several government portals let you check on your case. This article shows you the official ways to do it and what you will actually see.
What you need before you start
Keep these things with you before you open any portal:
- Your FIR number. The station gives you this number when a case is registered, usually with the year.
- The name of the police station that recorded the FIR.
- Your CNIC for checks that need identity verification.
- Your E-Tag slip if you filed a complaint through a police station front desk.
You do not need to hire anyone to do this. The official services are free or cost only the standard fees.
The official ways to check an FIR in Punjab
1. The Punjab Police website and the Dastak portal
The official Punjab Police website is punjabpolice.gov.pk. It is part of Dastak, the one window for Punjab government services. Under the police section you will find a Copy of FIR service and a Crime Report service on the Dastak portal. You apply online and either collect the document yourself or choose doorstep delivery.
You can also track an application after you file it. The Khidmat Markaz track page asks for your details and shows where your application stands.
2. The Punjab Police App
The Punjab Police App is on Google Play and the App Store. It covers online complaint filing, crime reporting, character certificate requests, police verification, and tenant registration. Some services ask you to verify your CNIC once through the Nadra PakID app before you can use them.
3. The IGP Complaint Center 1787
If your complaint or case seems stuck, the IGP Complaint Center is the escalation route. You can call or SMS the short code 1787, or lodge an e-complaint online. Punjab Police state that once a complaint enters this system, you can track its progress online or by SMS.
Why this works: Punjab records FIRs digitally
Punjab runs an Electronic FIR system built by the Punjab Information Technology Board. According to PITB, it is operational in every police station in the province and is integrated with Nadra. The system covers the full life of a case, from registration to investigation to court proceedings and closure. PITB and Punjab Police have also replicated this system for Sindh Police.
Because the record is digital, your case status exists in a system that officers and citizens can both reach. That is why online checking is possible in Punjab at all.
What you will see, and what you will not
You can see the stage of a case. Was it registered? Is the investigation running? Did the police send the file to court? These are the milestones the record shows.
You will not see the investigation file, witness statements, or recovery details. Those are internal police records. You also cannot type someone else's CNIC and pull up their cases. You can check your own record. That is a privacy protection, not a missing feature.
When online is not enough
Online checking has limits. A very new FIR may not appear for a day or two. One wrong digit in the FIR number or CNIC returns nothing.
If the station refused to register your report at all, that is a separate problem. The Punjab Police FAQ is clear: no police officer has the authority to refuse registration of a case. If a case is not registered after you report a crime, you must inform the Sub-Divisional Police Officer, the Superintendent of Police, or the District Police Officer for your area.
You can also request a transfer of investigation if you are not satisfied with the investigation. Under the Police Order 2002, the first change is ordered by the Additional Inspector General of Police, Investigation, and the second change by the Inspector General of Police himself.
Your rights when you report a crime in Punjab
When you report a cognizable offence, the police are bound to write it down as an FIR. That duty comes from section 154 of the Code of Criminal Procedure 1898.
A certified copy of the FIR, signed by an officer and bearing the stamp of the police station, must be given to the person who reports the crime. That is stated on the Punjab Police FAQ itself. Keep that copy safe. It carries your FIR number, and that number is what you type into the portals above.
One warning in return. Having a false case registered is an offence under section 182 of the Pakistan Penal Code, with a maximum punishment of six months in prison or a fine or both. An FIR does not mean anyone is guilty. It only means a case is open. Do not file a false one.
