Is There an FIR Against Me? Check by CNIC in Pakistan

A man in Lahore found out about an FIR only when his employer asked for a police character certificate. He had never been to a police station in his life. The FIR carried his name and his CNIC number. It was years old, from a dispute between two neighbours, and someone had named him without telling him.

This happens more than people think. Names get mixed up. CNIC numbers get copied wrong. Old cases stay on record long after they should be closed. The real question is how you find out, and what you do next.

Can you check FIRs by CNIC in Pakistan?

The short answer is no single website. There is no one portal where you type your CNIC and see every FIR against your name in the whole country. Police records are provincial. Each province runs its own system.

Two things work in practice. A police verification certificate, which makes police run your CNIC against their records. And the provincial FIR services, which let you look up FIRs online.

What an FIR is, and what it is not

FIR stands for First Information Report. Under section 154 of the Code of Criminal Procedure 1898, it is the written record police make when someone reports a cognizable offence. A cognizable offence is one where police can arrest a person without a court order first.

Here is the part people forget. An FIR is an allegation. It is someone's version of events, written down by police. It is not a conviction and it is not proof that you did anything. You stay innocent until a court decides otherwise.

Even so, an open FIR can block a job, a visa or a bank account. So you want to know about it early. If you are unsure what an FIR means in full, our guide to what an FIR is in Pakistan explains it from the start, and our guide to checking your FIR online in Pakistan walks through the older police portals.

Where to check, province by province

Punjab. Start with Dastak, the official Punjab portal. You log in with your CNIC and apply for a copy of an FIR. The Punjab Police portal at fir.punjabpolice.gov.pk also carries FIR details. For a certificate of your overall police record, apply for a character certificate or general police verification through the Police Khidmat Markaz. The PKM service page lists a processing fee of Rs 300.

Sindh. The Sindh Police run the Police Record Verification System at prvs.sindhpolice.gov.pk. You apply online with your CNIC and track the application with a case ID. For FIR records in Karachi, the Citizens Police Liaison Committee keeps a FIR database that goes back to 1987 and is updated daily.

KPK. KPK Police issue character certificates through the police station process described on the KPK Police website. A separate online Police Clearance System covers the Malakand Levies area.

Other areas. If your district has no online portal, go to the local police station and ask for a police verification certificate. That route still works everywhere in Pakistan. For a province by province comparison of all the FIR portals, see our guide to checking an FIR online in every province.

What a police verification certificate shows

Employers, banks and embassies ask for these certificates because they show whether any case is registered against your CNIC. A clean certificate says no FIR or case is active against you in that district. That is the practical version of a CNIC check.

One limit matters. Verification usually happens district by district. A certificate from Lahore may not show a case registered in Karachi. KPK Police say it plainly on their website: if you have more than one address, you verify your criminal record from all the police stations involved. If you have lived in more than one city, do the same.

An FIR shows up. Now what?

First, do not panic. An FIR is an allegation, not a verdict.

Then work through these steps in order:

  1. Get a copy of the FIR. In Punjab, use Dastak or an e-Khidmat Markaz. Elsewhere, go to the police station where the FIR was registered and ask for a certified copy.
  2. Read it carefully. Check the name, the CNIC and the district. Identity errors happen. If the FIR is not yours, tell the station house officer in writing and ask for the record to be corrected.
  3. If it is yours, see a lawyer before you speak to anyone. Some offences are compoundable, which means the parties can settle them. A compromise under section 345 of the CrPC can end such a case.
  4. If arrest is a real risk, apply for bail before arrest. Under section 498 of the CrPC, you can ask the court to protect you from arrest while the matter is resolved.
  5. Do not ignore it. Missing a hearing can produce arrest warrants, and that turns a small problem into a big one.

What this means for you

Check your record before someone else checks it for you. If you are applying for a job, a visa or a loan, run the check yourself first. It takes a few minutes on the portals above. Knowing the truth is always cheaper than finding it out late.

If the record is clean, keep the certificate. It stays useful proof for years.
